Network Requirements for Best Results with PbN Voice Phones

The following network settings and recommendations will help PbN Voice customers get the most out of their VoIP service.


Network Settings

  • SIP-ALG needs to be disabled as well as all other mechanisms (H323) that alter SIP traffic, SIP headers, and SIP SDP information.
  • SIP bi-directional traffic needs to be allowed on UDP/TCP ports 5060-5061.
  • RTP bi-directional traffic needs to be allowed on UDP ports 16384-32768.
  • DNS queries need to be allowed from the phones to the Internet (UDP 53).
  • You will need to build an Outbound firewall rule for PbN Voice Traffic using our FQDN: ip-addr.pbnvoice.io
  • HTTP (TCP Port 80) is required for PbN Voice phones to download their configuration files.


  • DHCP is required for any PbN Voice devices on-premise. If you need static IP addresses, we recommend using DHCP reservations. Otherwise, static IP addresses may be used if they are set up and maintained by the customer's IT staff.
  • VLANs are supported but must be set up and maintained by the customer's IT staff.
  • PbN Voice Phones must bypass all firewall advanced security features (IPS/Content Filtering/Etc.). These processes have been shown to cause issues with voice quality and connectivity.
  • An Ethernet Connection is required for each PbN Voice device. In the case where only one ethernet outlet is available, PbN Voice supported devices should have a built-in switch. A PbN Voice device must be plugged in first and all other devices must be plugged in through the PbN Voice device.
  • NAT is an essential part of most networks. PbN Voice devices do support NAT traversal over a single NAT connection. Networks with double NATs are not supported and will cause undesired results.

  • Make sure your internet speeds are a minimum of 20 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up. Recommended speeds are 50+ Mbps down, 20+ Mbps up
  • Network latency to PbN Voice's SBCs should be below 70 ms, but below 50 ms is recommended.
