Handling Alternate and Sequenced/Phased Treatment Plans
When dealing with multiple treatment plans for the same issue (e.g., bridge, implant, or partial to replace a missing tooth), it's important to manage the service codes correctly to avoid inflating the total treatment cost. Follow these steps:
1. Multiple treatment plans to treat the same problem:
- Place all service codes in Open Dental's Active Treatment Plan.
- If a patient declines certain service codes, move them from the Active Treatment Plan to an Inactive Unassigned Treatment Plan. These codes will be marked as "Treatment Plan Inactive."
2. Multiple unique treatment plans:
- Label the priority of each treatment plan in Open Dental.
- Set the recommended treatment plan as "Active."
- Set other plans to "Saved."
- This method ensures that all treatment costs are included in the Treatment Presented Key Performance Indicator (KPI) in Practice IQ.
Managing Saved Treatment Plans
Open Dental uses Saved treatment plans to differentiate between treatments that the patient has accepted and is scheduling for. If the same service codes appear in both a Saved and Active Treatment Plan, the costs will not be duplicated in the Treatment Presented or Treatment Accepted totals.
Important Considerations
- Avoid Adding New Diagnoses to Old Saved Plans:
- Do not add newly diagnosed treatments to an older Saved plan. Doing so will cause Practice IQ to treat all older recommended treatments as newly diagnosed, updating all code dates to the date the new treatment was added.
- For example, if you planned for three crowns last week and add another crown this week, the daily Presented Amount will include the cost of the previously diagnosed crowns.
By following these guidelines, you can effectively manage multiple treatment plans in Open Dental and ensure accurate tracking in Practice IQ.
